Kamala Devi Harris (born October 20, 1964) is an American politician and attorney who is the 49th and current vice president of the United States. A member of the Democratic Party, she has served as the junior United States senator for California since 2017.

Harris was born in Oakland, California, to an Indian-American father and a Jamaican-American mother. She graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Harris began her career as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County, California, before being elected district attorney of San Francisco in 2003. In 2011, she was elected California's first female attorney general.

In 2016, Harris was elected to the United States Senate, becoming the second African American woman and the first South Asian American woman to serve in the Senate. As a senator, she has been a vocal advocate for criminal justice reform, healthcare access, and environmental protection. In 2020, Harris was selected as the running mate for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

Harris and Biden were elected in the 2020 presidential election, and she was sworn in as vice president on January 20, 2021. As vice president, Harris has played a key role in the Biden administration's efforts to address the COVID-19 pandemic, the economy, and climate change.
